Exhibits

WHAT IS YOUR JOURNEY STORY?  Islanders are invited to share their own stories, or those of their relatives and ancestors, from the story of their first arrival in America to relatively contemporary stories of how they happened to arrive on Orcas Island. We also welcome more contemporary stories of memorable travels to or from any location. See right side panel for detailed information.

In the main exhibit hall are displayed several large photos and stories of local residents who live, or lived, on Orcas Island since the early days

Orcas OldTimers

May Shiozawa
Orcas resident, May Shiozawa, was born in California, the daughter of Japanese immigrants. At the age of sixteen she and her family were taken to an internment camp located at a race track, where she and her family lived in a horse stall for several months. Later they were moved to another camp in Topaz, Utah where they waited out the duration of WW II. Her story, and those of other island residents, are told in a video on continuous display.

Now that the Smithsonian Journey Stories exhibit has moved on to it's next destination, the Museum will be resuming it's usual schedule. Starting Friday September 3rd, we are open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 4pm.

The Orcas Island Historical Museum is collecting journey stories from island residents in commemoration of this summer’s Smithsonian exhibit, all to be compiled into a beautifully hand-made book, created by Denise Wilk using local deerskin (shown below). This book will be archived and remain at the Orcas Museum. We encourage islanders to submit their stories in standard 8.5 x 11 inch size paper format so they will fit the page protectors in the book. Submissions are still being accepted!
